After spending weeks in quiet towns, surrounded by nature, waking up with the ocean only footsteps from bed... I wasn’t particularly excited for Sydney. City life. The big smoke. The storm and stress of traffic. A Kombi in that traffic… No thanking you. Leave me by the sea please.
We were going for the appointments, to go and visit, and show our wines to some of the best bottle shops, bars and restaurants getting around, and it was going to be worth it. In and out, quick as we can - that was my philosophy.
But, far out brussels sprout… Sydney - I love you. We love you. We’ve seen you in a whole new light (sunlight, lots of sunlight). Such a beautiful sun drenched city, surrounded by so many beautiful beaches, filled with beautiful (and I mean beautiful) bars and restaurants, and so many beautiful souls. We had a ball!
We spent the first night in the van, parked on a leafy street in a rather dishy area, with a view of the city lights twinkling, and I thought, “Ok… not bad Sydney”. The next morning we swam a few laps at the uni pool, showered, made ourselves presentable, and went out to our meetings. I love that these people would have no idea that we’d spent the night before sleeping in our van! Unless they read this… (if you do, we still shower :) And thanks for loving the wines - we’re so excited that we’re now stocked in Sydney!)
My plan of a ‘quick trip’ quickly went out the window, there is just so much to do in this sprawling city.
We spent most of our time in the cutest little Spanish apartment we found on Airbnb. If you didn’t see the tour I put up on Instagram, it was in a lovely Spanish building, with a tropical courtyard, great for anyone on a budget, the apartment itself was really well styled, and very inviting. This place was a gem. Right in the heart of everything.
Possibly one of my biggest highlights (and the best gift I’ve ever been given - thanks Dom!) was seeing My Fair Lady at the Sydney Opera House. Happy tears! So many happy tears. We were both left on a total high after we walked out, what an experience!And then we drove across the bridge to Lavender Bay, waited at the dock where we were picked up by a yacht, which was to be all ours for the night! One of our favourite Airbnb finds to date.
It was a warm, still night and we had what must be the best view in Sydney. It was a dream. Looking straight across the water at the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Luna Park all lit up, and the whole city twinkling, while we laid on top of the yacht, surrounded by still, silent water.
In the morning the owner rowed out to us and took us sailing around the Harbour. When he asked Dom and I if we wanted to drive, we thought he just meant a quick spin. I had a quick spin, but Dom ended up sailing around the Harbour for over an hour. What a way to start your Monday! Another thing on the bucket list ticked! What a high he was on after that! Such a wonderful experience - I’d highly recommend.
There are two cabins below deck, with a dining area, kitchen and bathroom. Perfect for a romantic night (which we certainly had ;) or for a night with friends. It’s BYO too, which was super handy for us! Click HERE for the link.
